The Design of a Color Measurement Device That Digitalizes Color

To address the challenges of color matching in commercial printing—such as time-consuming adjustments and repeated confirmations with clients—we visualized an ideal customer journey, one on which they would carry a pocket-sized color measurement device capable of precise color matching. This vision aligned development goals across teams. We focused on an easy-to-use shape, finish, and compact size, enhancing the user experience through integration with cloud services and smartphones, thereby streamlining processes in the printing industry.

Pocket-Sized for Easy Portability

To achieve a compact, lightweight, and highly portable pocket-sized device with quick, intuitive color measurement—similar to using a mouse—we optimized the internal layout of the photospectroscopic device, battery, circuit board, internal frame, and interface.

Pursuing the Essence of Optical Instrumentation

To ensure users experience both precision and ease of use typical of optical instruments, we incorporated side grips with a leather-grain texture that comfortably fit and can be held in either hand.

The Epson logo is crafted with an inlay technique, adapted from our watch manufacturing expertise, providing a high-quality finish.

Expanding Usage Possibilities

We developed this color measurement device not only for standalone use but also to enhance the user experience by integrating with smartphones and the cloud.

This device is designed for more than just commercial printing environments; it also supports designers and artists working with color. They can easily carry it to capture and record colors of interest, seamlessly incorporating these into their creative work.
