Designer Interview | Product Design - Micro Injection Molding Machine
A Design That Transforms the Image of Component Molding and Factories
Epson's micro injection molding machine was selected for the "Good Design Best 100" award in 2022.
The designer discusses key design points and approaches to problem-solving.
Masahiko Kobayashi joined Epson in 1989. After serving as a product director for printers, he is currently engaged in a wide range of activities focused primarily on development-related design.
Creating the factory of the future with a new design.
―Tell us about the key points of the design.
I designed the micro injection molding machine with the future factory in mind and envisioned its use in office spaces where molding machines couldn't be placed before. Conceptually, the developers and I envisioned a "transparent capsule," leading to a clean and beautiful design. By eliminating unnecessary design elements and emphasizing the texture of metal and glass, we created a design that evokes a futuristic smart factory. Additionally, we aimed for a design where the moment a molded product is created can be seen through the clear case, allowing producers to feel the excitement of craftsmanship.
The initial prototype had an issue where it required space when the door was opened. To address this, we proposed a mechanism where the door slides sideways. Furthermore, we highlighted the beauty of the mold to make it intuitively recognizable as a molding machine for developers. I believe we were able to achieve a clean and beautiful design worthy of a factory of the future.
Acclaimed as a Design That Merges Technology and Beauty to Address Societal Issues
―How do you feel about winning the Best 100 award?
We believe that producing only what is needed, in the amount needed, is an essential theme for a sustainable society. However, small-lot, high-mix production often results in significant material waste, and creating small items on a small scale is a challenge. By miniaturizing the molding machine itself and incorporating energy-saving mechanisms, we made it possible to efficiently do on a desktop what once was done only in large factories. This approach was acclaimed for providing a glimpse into the future of manufacturing. The award reminded me that design is about merging technology and beauty to enrich people's lives.
Pursuing Designs That Resonate With Users and Exceed Their Expectations
―What is important to you as a designer?
What I value most in design is how the user feels when using the product. I strive to imagine how users will interact with the product, incorporate subtle ideas that exceed their expectations, and bring them to life in a way that delivers the product's value attractively. I believe that allowing customers to enjoy using a product and making them fans of the brand is an essential function of design.
At Epson, there are opportunities to take on design challenges across various fields. I want to continue pursuing designs that break boundaries and solve societal issues, contributing to a better future for everyone.
